VIII

Tidings of mighty waters will be given
In wafting of cool air as roaring mounts.
Walk toward the sound: palazzi will seem driven
Aside, disclosing Trevi, queen of founts.

Cascading silver from facades will spout,
Marine steeds, brightly fierce, will leap aside;
Glad welcome nymphs from grottos will come out
As Neptune greets the maiden of the tide.

How many times, a fugitive from Rome
Against my will, I have beseeched return,
Over my shoulder casting coins in foam.
The vows have come to pass as they were sworn.

This day again, enchanting fount, you bless
The pilgrim you restore to holiness.
